Nyetimber Mazda 2009

Nytimber Mazda Open Tournament 2009

On Friday morning 19th June 24 teams from Sussex and beyond converged on Waterloo Square , suitcases bulging with wet gear and bowls all set to battle the dire weather predicted by the Met.Office, although we were given an envelope with all instructions for the day, people milled around an already harassed Dave Batcock with all sorts of questions.

Winners of the Spider Brenda Cunninghams and Barry Horsley being presented with their prizes by the Mayoress Eileen Anderson.

Waterloo Square buzzed with conversation and lots of 'nice to see you again' , teams discussed match strategy whilst players on the sidelines watched the line of the rink they were waiting to play on hopping to gain an advantage over their next opponents.

Winners of the Mazda 2009 were the "Friends" a men's four from Hotham B.C. Brian Olver, Trevor Bulmer and from the Grasshoppers Andy Leggett and Bryan McClaren. They were delighted to win the first prize and be crowned 2009 Mazda Champions.

Runners Up Ken Murphy, Tommy Gaskin, Terry Rexstrew & Brian Doncaster (not available for photograph, getting his round in apparently, obviously more important!).

3rd Place The 4 Pennies' Penny Jones, Barry Horsley, Pat & Ron Friday.

The lads from Bognor coming 4th Alan Hall, Steve Soames, Ned Waddock & Gerry Stevens.

Ladies from RAFA who make the Mazda a great day and always helping out Barbara Butt, Janet Fullbrook, Hilary Ayton, Beryl Charlesworth & Penny Jones.

The weather predictions proved all wrong, the sun shone all day, we were all feed and watered admirably by Rosie and her staff in the kitchen and the bar staff at the RAFA Club.

Dave Batcock thanked all who had helped throughout the day, Mazda for their continued sponsorship and the teams who turned out to play from as far away as Plumstead as without their participation none of this could have happened, proving that Waterloo Square is once again the only place to be come 18th June 2010.

Looking forward to meeting you all again.
